Scott McCoy is the fair-haired guy who fundamentally believes in the good that politics can do. Mark Barr is darker in tone, jaded by politics, but idealistic in his own way.
Together, they're probably one of the best things that every happened to the Utah Senate.
McCoy, a lawyer, has stepped down from his Senate seat to handle a two-month trial that would take him out of state for much of the 2010 legislative session. Almost 29 years ago a waitress rushed over to my table at a Wisconsin restaurant and blurted out: "John Lennon has been shot!" I was at a reporters association meeting in LaCrosse, Wisconsin where I was an anchor boy. We all just sat there in disbelief and started pounding beers. A few minutes later she came over and said the Beatle was dead. I spent the night listening to the radio. I was numb. So was the rest of the country. I didn't sleep a wink. I was too young to remember JFK. I was too young to understand the impact of death of RFK as I watched it on TV. This was the first death of someone i idolized. I was blessed to interview the three surviving Beatles during my career. I asked George, Paul and Ringo about John in my interviews. Each one of them spoke softly....wistfully when his name was mentioned. BTW- The guy in the right of the picture killed him just hours later.
